Motion Control

A New Driving Force

About the Book

The evolution of electric motion control and actuation has been happening on parallel paths. While most of the big interest in this arena is around large things—cars, buses, construction, and agricultural equipment—it’s the smaller applications that hold the greatest promise.

While hardly “new” technology, electric motors and actuators have gained increasing favor because they are clean energy with precise control capabilities. The technologies around motors and actuators have evolved, and as manufacturers look to better manage energy costs and environmental concerns, electric systems are rising to the occasion.

As this e-book demonstrates, however, it’s not just as simple as adding electric systems and having a more efficient operation. There are considerations about motor selection (servo vs. stepper, for example), motor sizing, the use of encoders and the availability and value in DC power for systems. As with every other system on the plant floor, effective use of electric motors and actuators is a product of precise engineering, a clear understanding of operational goals and an understanding of the potential—and limits—of electric systems.

The results, however, can be important, as we demonstrate in the final case study in this book. The coordinated use of small electric motors and actuators give amputees using prosthetics a more natural way of walking. The lightweight motors and actuators make the technology possible and practical, and the engineering is the key to its effective use.
